New Autonomous Platform Enables Drones to Take Off and Land Safely at Sea

Abstract:A new autonomous drone landing and takeoff platform enables safe VTOL operations from vessels of various sizes, even in rough sea conditions. The system relies on AI-driven guidance, a stabilized pad, and a catch-lock-release mechanism to ensure precise and secure drone recovery without modifying the drone itself.


A newly introduced fully automatic landing and takeoff platform is designed to allow vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL) drones to operate safely from moving vessels. The system can accommodate decks of any size and works without requiring hardware or software modifications to the drone.




The platform features a patent-pending catch-lock-release mechanism combined with AI-driven predictive algorithms, ensuring safe drone recovery even in rough seas. It supports drones weighing up to 15 kg (33 lb.), with plans to expand compatibility to both lighter and heavier UAVs.


Landing drones on moving ships presents unique challenges, including rolling decks, unpredictable waves, and slippery surfaces. The platform addresses these by preventing drones from bouncing or sliding after touchdown, while a gyro-stabilized pad keeps the landing surface level during vessel motion.


The system operates independently but can integrate with most drones through their remote control units. By mimicking pilot inputs in real time, the platform can take over control for landing or takeoff, while human operators retain the ability to intervene at any moment.




AI algorithms guide drones to the platform by simulating varied sea conditions and testing in real-world maritime environments. This allows the system to handle differences in drone size, weight, and flight behavior, ensuring robust performance across multiple platforms, including multicopters, fixed-wing, and helicopters.




The technology is positioned for diverse applications, from offshore energy inspections and fisheries monitoring to search-and-rescue missions and maritime logistics. By enabling safe drone operations from smaller vessels, the platform opens up new possibilities for industries reliant on maritime UAV deployment.
