A next-generation autonomous warehouse robot, Proteus, has been unveiled as part of a €10 billion ($11.6 billion) investment to modernize European fulfillment networks. Unlike the previous model, which was limited to loading dock zones, the redesigned Proteus can move throughout entire facilities, transporting goods wherever needed. Using advanced AI, employees can now direct the robot with plain conversational language, while it independently determines priorities, routes, and timing.

Proteus continues to handle heavy carts—up to 400 kilograms—allowing workers to focus on higher-skilled tasks such as inventory management and quality control. The robot is currently undergoing testing, with deployment across European facilities planned for the first half of 2027.

The investment also includes the expansion of two other robotic systems. Vulcan, a touch-sensitive robot, is being rolled out to additional sites, while STARK, a tote-handling system, will reach 15 locations by 2027, assisting employees with repetitive lifting and placement tasks.

In addition to automation, the initiative includes workforce growth, with plans to add 25,000 new fulfillment center jobs in Europe, supplementing the existing 1.5 million supported positions. Rapid-delivery services are also expanding, with several cities set to receive same-day or sub-same-day fulfillment hubs, enabling customers to place late-afternoon orders for delivery that evening, enhancing speed and convenience across the region.
