Watch: A Humanoid Robot’s Tennis Skills Are Nearly Professional-Grade

For tennis enthusiasts, not finding a suitable partner to play with is often a major disappointment. Now, the Walker S2 humanoid robot, launched by the Chinese tech company UBTECH, may finally end this problem. A newly released video shows the robot wielding a tennis racket with movements comparable to a professional player, nimbly maneuvering on the court, hitting the ball accurately, and engaging in smooth rallies with a human opponent, showcasing the unique charm of cutting-edge technology.

This video, recorded at normal speed and edited, still authentically presents the core performance of the Walker S2: it can accurately capture the trajectory of the incoming ball, quickly adjust its stance, choose the appropriate hitting method, and maintain balance and stability throughout the entire swing. It's important to understand that tennis places extremely high demands on humanoid robots, requiring not only high-precision visual recognition and prediction capabilities but also flexible limb control and rapid reaction speed. Any deviation in any of these aspects can lead to a failed shot. The Walker S2's smooth and controllable hitting movements undoubtedly demonstrate its breakthroughs in the three core areas of perception, decision-making, and execution.

However, it's currently unclear whether UBTECH plans to officially position Walker S2 as a tennis partner. This video release is more likely intended to showcase the robot's advanced technological capabilities. But considering technological development trends, with algorithm optimization and hardware upgrades, the future Walker S2 is expected to further improve in speed and agility, allowing it to move freely on the court like a human athlete, and even compete against human players in singles matches. Many tech enthusiasts speculate that tennis might be officially included in the Robot Olympics in the near future, showcasing exciting human-machine competition.

Public information shows that the Walker S2 humanoid robot officially debuted in 2024. As a high-end industrial-grade humanoid robot, one of its biggest highlights is its autonomous battery-swapping capability, enabling 24/7 continuous operation. This feature gives it broad application prospects in commercial and industrial scenarios. In fact, UBTECH attracted industry attention last November with a deployment video showing hundreds of Walker S2 robots working in commercial and industrial settings. However, the video's authenticity was questionable at the time, though UBTECH officially confirmed its accuracy.

It's worth noting that 2026 is considered a pivotal year for humanoid robots, with increasingly fierce global competition. Besides UBTECH, many well-known companies such as Boston Dynamics, Figure AI, Unitree Robotics, and 1X are also investing in this field, focusing not only on improving agility but also on enhancing the level of artificial intelligence. With continuous technological iteration, humanoid robots are gradually breaking through scenario limitations, extending from industrial operations to more areas such as public services, and are expected to profoundly change people's lifestyles.

From industrial settings to sports arenas, Walker S2's tennis performance is just one example of the advancements in humanoid robot technology. With the continued efforts of global technology companies, it is believed that in the near future, more multi-functional humanoid robots will enter the public eye, injecting new vitality into various industries.
