Dominican Republic Announces Discovery of Over 150 Million Tons of Rare Earth Minerals

On February 27, 2026, President Luis Abinader announced the discovery of over 150 million tons of rare earth minerals in the Dominican Republic, including vital elements like neodymium, praseodymium, and terbium. The discovery, located in the Pedernales province, could transform the country’s economy, which has long relied on agriculture and tourism.

Exploration and Certification

The rare earth deposits are found in bauxite ore, with promising initial exploration results. However, the 150 million tons is an estimate, and the reserves' commercial viability will be confirmed through certification in early 2027, which is essential for large-scale mining.
