Liquid Metal Electronics Go Multifunctional with Single-Step Transfer Printing

Summary:A new single-step transfer-printing method turns liquid metal particles into stretchable electronics with tunable conductive, insulating, and electromechanical properties. The all-liquid-metal platform enables seamless wearable sensors, heaters, displays, and multimodal health monitoring without mechanical mismatch.

Researchers have unveiled a programmable single-step transfer printing technique that transforms liquid metal particles (LMPs) into all-liquid-metal (all-LM) stretchable electronics with spatial-variant electrical and electromechanical properties. The advance could accelerate flexible electronics, soft robotics, wearable health tech, and skin-interfaced devices.

At the core is eutectic gallium-indium (EGaIn), a room-temperature liquid metal known for high conductivity and flowability. The challenge has been patterning it into multifunctional systems. Traditional approaches often combine different materials or complex geometries, causing interfacial mechanical mismatch, unstable connections, and limited miniaturization.

The new method engineers interfacial adhesion and LMP size. Partial transfer printing ruptures LMPs to create conductive patterns; complete transfer keeps them intact, producing insulating but thermally conductive patterns. By tuning particle size and donor-receiver adhesion, the same material can serve as interconnects, strain sensors, Joule heaters, dielectric layers, and heat-dissipation paths.

Because the patterns are integrated in a single transfer step, they form robust, seamless interfaces. The team demonstrated resistance-variant all-LM electronics with stable contact resistance under * stretching. They also built compact stretchable Joule heaters, individually addressable thermal displays, a 4×4 LED array, an NFC coil, a wearable RF energy harvester, and a modulus-reconfigurable substrate.

In wearable tests, the all-LM system monitored electrocardiography (ECG), galvanic skin response (GSR), respiration, and movement. It tracked mental and physical states during rest, IQ tests, exercise, and recovery. The platform also powered wireless charging and Bluetooth data transmission when integrated into sport tights.

The work addresses a long-standing bottleneck: how to integrate conductive interconnects, sensing units, and insulating components without mechanical mismatch. By using one material and one programmable process, it opens a path toward standalone all-LM stretchable electronics for physiological and mental health monitoring.

Potential applications include smart skin, medical wearables, soft robots, human-machine interfaces, and high-power stretchable devices. The team suggests high-resolution, large-area patterning, surface mounting, and skin interfacing may pave the way for future advanced stretchable electronics.
