How I Built a Budget Robotic Arm
This video shows an open-source robotic arm built by the creator, with a total cost of about $2,300 (mainly spent on Dynamixel motors). The arm has 7 degrees of freedom (waist, shoulder, elbow, three wrist joints, and gripper), can rotate more than 360 degrees, and can lift about 1 kg. The creator details the design of 3D printed parts, aluminum extrusions, a planetary gear drive, and a parallel gripper. Tests reveal that the plastic gears bend and twist under load, reducing accuracy, so future improvements will require finding cheaper and stronger motors.
